We encourage everyone six months and older to get their flu shot each year. It’s not just about protecting yourself; it’s about protecting your community, especially those who are more vulnerable.
Understanding High-Dose Flu Shots
While most people receive the standard flu vaccine, some individuals, particularly older adults, may benefit from a high-dose flu shot.
- What’s the Difference? A high-dose flu vaccine contains four times the antigen (the part of the vaccine that prompts an immune response) compared to a standard-dose flu vaccine. This is designed to create a stronger immune response, offering better protection for those with potentially weaker immune systems.
- Who is Eligible? In Alberta, high-dose flu shots are typically recommended for and offered to Patients on Alberta Seniors Benefit . This group often has a diminished immune response to standard-dose vaccines, making the high-dose option a more effective choice.
Availability: High-dose flu shots are provided based on Alberta Health guidelines and availability. When you book your appointment, our pharmacy team can discuss if this option is suitable for you.
COVID-19 Vaccination: Staying Protected in 2025
Beyond the flu, staying current with your COVID-19 vaccination remains vital. Alberta Health continues to provide access to COVID-19 vaccines for eligible groups.
Who is Eligible for a FREE COVID-19 Shot through Alberta Health?
Based on current Alberta Health guidelines, certain priority groups can receive the COVID-19 vaccine at no cost. You are generally eligible if you are:
- 65 years of age and older: Older adults remain a priority for COVID-19 vaccination due to increased risk of severe outcomes.
- A Health Care Worker: Frontline workers who are regularly exposed to patients are encouraged to stay up-to-date.
- A Resident in Continuing Care: Individuals living in long-term care or designated supportive living facilities.
- An individual with certain underlying medical conditions: This includes a broad range of conditions that can increase the risk of severe illness from COVID-19, such as:
- Diabetes
- Heart conditions
- Chronic lung conditions (e.g., asthma, COPD)
- Kidney disease
- Liver disease
- Obesity (BMI 40 and above)
- Immunocompromised individuals
- Pregnant individuals
What if You're Not in an Eligible Group for a Free Shot?
Don’t worry! If you don’t fall into one of the Alberta Health eligible categories for a free COVID-19 vaccine, iCare Pharmacy has private stock available for those 12 years and older.
Insurance Coverage Tip: Many private insurance plans do cover the cost of privately purchased vaccines. We highly recommend calling us at the pharmacy beforehand to check if your specific insurance provider covers the COVID-19 shot.
