If you are on an oral medication you absorb that medication through your bloodstream and as a result are more prone to its side effects.
The advantage of taking the same oral medication as a topical medication is that it has its effect directly to the area that it is being applied and because it is not being readily absorbed into your bloodstream you are less prone to side effects such as mental clouding as an example.
