Top 3 Tips to Fight Acne and Clear Your Skin

3 Easy Tips to Help Control Acne

Acne can be frustrating, but with the right routine, you can keep breakouts in check! Here are three simple but effective tips to help you manage acne and keep your skin looking its best.

1. Use a Gentle Cleanser

Cleansing your skin is essential, but harsh scrubbing can make acne worse. Instead of using strong soaps that strip your skin (like heavily perfumed soaps such as Irish Spring), opt for a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser. A mild cleanser removes oil and dirt without irritating your skin (American Academy of Dermatology Association [AAD], n.d.).

Personally, I like Cetaphil—it’s not only great for me, but also gentle enough for my little one.

How to Wash Your Face Properly:

  • Use lukewarm water (hot water can dry out your skin)
  • Gently rub the cleanser in circular motions (no scrubbing!)
  • Pat your face dry with a soft towel—don’t rub

2. Keep Your Skin Hydrated with a Gentle Moisturizer

Many people think they should dry out their skin to fight acne, but that can actually make things worse! When your skin is dry, it produces more oil to compensate, which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. Using a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer (which won’t clog pores) helps keep your skin balanced (Mayo Clinic, 2023).

Look for products labeled “oil-free” or “for acne-prone skin” to get the best results.

3. Try Medicated Acne Creams

If you need extra help, medicated creams can be a game-changer. Two of the most common acne-fighting ingredients are:

🔹 Benzoyl Peroxide – Helps fight acne-causing bacteria and reduces inflammation. Start with a lower percentage (like 2.5%) to avoid excessive dryness (AAD, n.d.).

🔹 Salicylic Acid – Works by exfoliating the skin, unclogging pores, and speeding up skin renewal. It’s great for preventing breakouts before they start (WebMD, n.d.).

If you’re unsure which treatment to use, you can always check with your pharmacist (that’s what I’m here for!).

The Bottom Line

Acne doesn’t have to be a never-ending battle. A simple routine with gentle cleansing, hydration, and the right medicated treatments can make a big difference. Stick with it, be patient, and your skin will thank you!
